The reader: "This is how it is in the narrations, and 'and the 'Asr prayer' is with a waw. Some of our scholars used this as evidence that the middle prayer is not the 'Asr prayer, because conjunction implies difference. However, our school holds that an anomalous recitation is not used as evidence and does not have the ruling of a report from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), because its transmitter did not transmit it except as Qur'an, and the Qur'an is not established except by mass transmission and consensus. If it is not established as Qur'an, it is not established as a report. This issue is established in the principles of jurisprudence, and there is disagreement between us and Abu Hanifa (may Allah have mercy on him)."

The Shaykh : And between him and the distinguished scholars, other than the followers of Abu Hanifa, as well. For the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) holds that it is evidence and that it is permissible to recite with it if it is sound, and this is the correct view. As for the statement that we do not accept except what is mass-transmitted, there is consideration in that. Yes, it is complete.
The reader: The text has ended, O Shaykh. His statement: "that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him)".

The Shaykh : The reality is that the hadith of Aisha indicates that there is a middle prayer and an 'Asr prayer, because it says: Guard the prayers and the middle prayer and the 'Asr prayer. This contains a problem, unless it is said that it is from the category of conjoining a synonym to its counterpart, like His saying: "And he found her words to be a lie and a sin," and sin is a lie. But something may be conjoined to its synonym for clarification and the like. If we say this, then his saying "and the 'Asr prayer" clarifies his saying "the middle prayer," and that it is the same, as indicated by the hadith of al-Bara' (may Allah be pleased with him). With this, the problem is resolved if we say that the conjunction here is of a synonym to its synonym, not of a different thing to a different thing.
