The questioner : I am Egyptian, I am forty-two years old, and I am currently living in the worship of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). I worship Allah as He should be worshipped. I perform all the obligatory prayers on time, and I do more of the voluntary prayers and the worship of Allah, and I read the Noble Qur'an and do good in general. My problem, O honorable Shaykh, is that I did not pray or fast until I reached the age of thirty. So what should I do about those years that were wasted? What should I do about fasting in Ramadan? What should I do about the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever breaks the fast of Ramadan for one day intentionally, fasting for the rest of his life will not compensate for it من أفطر يوما متعمداً من رمضان لا يغني عنه صيام الدهر
? And what should I do about the past prayers? Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : I praise Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) who guided this brother, so he committed himself and worshipped Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to the best of his ability. And I ask Allah for steadfastness for me and for him upon the truth until death.
As for the years that have passed in which he left off fasting and prayer, he owes nothing for them, because repentance erases what came before it. So it is not obligatory for him to make up any fasting or any prayer that he left off before he repented, and repentance demolishes what came before it, praise be to Allah.
So let him praise Allah for the blessing of rectitude He has bestowed upon him, and let him ask Allah for steadfastness until death. I ask Allah for all of us that He may make us steadfast with the firm word in this worldly life and in the Hereafter.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O honorable Shaykh, and may He bless you.
