Explanation of the Book of Hajj-04a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abdullah ibn Yusuf narrated to us, he said: Malik informed us, from Nafi', from Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both):
That the talbiyah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was: "Labbaik Allahumma labbaik, labbaik la sharika laka labbaik, innal hamda wan ni'mata laka wal mulku la sharika laka."
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 4:392

The Shaykh : Now, regarding the talbiyah, do you know its meaning? There is no need to explain it, is it clear? "Labbaik" means "I am responding to you." The intended meaning of the duplication here is repetition, not actual duality, so it means I have responded with one response after another. His saying "Allahumma" means "O Allah." "Labbaik" is a repetition, but it is a repetition for benefit, which is a repetition of responding to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). "Labbaik la sharika laka labbaik": this contains sincerity to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) and that you are responding to Allah for no other purpose. "Innal hamda wan ni'mata": it is "inna" (indeed), and it has been said "anna" (that), but the correct is "inna" because "inna" is more comprehensive, whereas if "anna" is open, the estimation is "Labbaik because the blessing is for you," and if it is broken, it becomes a new sentence, making it more comprehensive.
All praise, thanks and blessings are for You. All sovereignty is for You.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 825Sahih (Darussalam)
"Al-hamd" means describing with excellence along with love and magnification. His saying "an ni'mah" includes the blessings of religion and worldly life, among which is that Allah has blessed you by bringing you to these noble places. "Al-mulk" encompasses everything in the heavens and the earth; all sovereignty belongs to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And his saying:
All sovereignty is for You. And You have no partners with You
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 825Sahih (Darussalam)
is like his saying in the first part,
You have no partner
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2751Sahih (Darussalam)
but the first is from the category of tawhid al-uluhiyyah (oneness of worship) and the second is from the category of tawhid al-rububiyyah (oneness of lordship). For this reason, Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) named this tawhid (the oneness of Allah) and said (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet(ﷺ) raised his voice in talbiyah
Sunan Abi Dawud 1804Sahih (Al-Albani)
