May Allah bless you. Do we understand from the first verse of Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) seeking forgiveness for the polytheists that it is likewise permissible to seek forgiveness for them with the intention of guidance?

The questioner : May Allah bless you. Do we understand from the first verse of Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) seeking forgiveness for the polytheists that it is permissible for us to seek forgiveness for them with the intention of guidance?

The Shaykh : This verse was abrogated by the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were relatives ما كان للنبي والذين آمنوا أن يستغفروا للمشركين ولو كانوا أولي قربى
[At-Tawbah 9:113]
But I seek forgiveness for them from Allah... Yes.
