What is the form of seeking forgiveness?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : The form of seeking forgiveness and the virtue of seeking forgiveness, because one of the brothers objected to me... I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no deity but He, and I repent to Him. I seek Your forgiveness from every great sin. He said, No, do not say "from every great sin."

The Shaykh : Seeking forgiveness is for a person to say, "O Allah, forgive me," or to say, "I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to Him," or to say the master of seeking forgiveness:
O God, Thou art my Lord. There is no god but Thee. Thou hast created me, and I am Thy servant and hold to Thy covenant and promise as much as I can. I seek refuge in Thee from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Thy favour to me, and I acknowledge my sin. Pardon me, for none but Thee pardons sins.
Mishkat al-Masabih 2335
There is no blame on a person for adding something, but not with the intention of worshipping Allah with it; however, the door of supplication is open, such as saying, "I seek forgiveness from Allah and I repent to Him from every sin," and the like. The preachers used to say on the minbars, "I say this and I seek forgiveness from Allah for me, for you, and for all Muslims from every sin, so seek His forgiveness; indeed, He is the Oft-Forgiving, the Merciful." There is no blame in saying, "O Allah, forgive me," or "I seek forgiveness from Allah from every great sin," or the like; there is nothing wrong with it. Yes.
