Explanation of the Book of Hajj-09a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn 'Ubayd ibn Maymun narrated to us, saying: Isa ibn Yunus narrated to us from 'Ubayd Allah ibn 'Umar from Nafi' from Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
When Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) performed the first Tawaf he did Ramal in the first three rounds and then walked in the remaining four rounds (of Tawaf of the Ka`ba), where as in performing Tawaf between Safa and Marwa he used to run in the midst of the rainwater passage كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا طاف الطواف الأول خب ثلاثاً ومشى أربعاً وكان يسعى بطن المسيل إذا طاف بين الصفا والمروة
Sahih al-Bukhari 1644
So I asked Nafi': "Did Abdullah walk when he reached the Yemeni Corner?" He said: "No, unless he was crowded at the corner, for he would not leave it until he touched it."

The Shaykh : His statement (may Allah have mercy on him): "The chapter on what has come regarding sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwah" includes the entire sa'y, but specifically refers to the sa'y between the two markers, meaning in the valley. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) would walk briskly in the valley, so much so that his lower garment would flutter around him due to the intensity of the sa'y. As for the question of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): "Did he walk when he reached the Yemeni Corner?"—this is based on the tawaf performed during the 'Umrah of Qada'—he says: "No, he would run (ramal) unless he was crowded at the stone, because he (may Allah be pleased with him) was insistent on touching the stone; he had to touch it. And in that case, it is not possible for him to run while trying to reach the Black Stone.
If someone were to ask: "Is it better to follow Ibn 'Umar in this matter, meaning not to run in order to reach the stone for touching, or is it better to run?" The answer is: The second option is better, because running (ramal) is a recommended practice (sunnah) in the manner of tawaf, so it takes precedence over a recommended practice (sunnah) in the tawaf itself that is not part of its manner.
