Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted: “Permitted to you is the game of the sea.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Reciter: Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted:
Lawful to you is game from the sea أحل لكم صيد البحر
[Al-Ma'idah 5:96]
, and 'Umar said: Its game is what is hunted, and its food is what is thrown up. And Abu Bakr said: What floats is lawful. And Ibn 'Abbas said: Its food is its carrion, except for what you find repulsive; and the swimming fish, the Jews do not eat it, but we do. And Shurayh, a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: Everything in the sea is slaughtered. And 'Ata said: As for the birds, I think they should be slaughtered. And Ibn Jurayj said: I asked 'Ata, “Is the game of rivers and small streams considered sea game?” He said: Yes. Then he recited:
One is fresh and sweet, palatable for drinking, and one is salty and bitter. And from each you eat tender meat هذا عذب فرات سائغ شرابه وهذا ملح أجاج ومن كل تأكلون لحما طريا
[Fatir 35:12]
. And al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) rode on a saddle made of the skins of water dogs. And al-Sha'bi said: If my family ate frogs, I would feed them. And al-Hasan saw no harm in eating turtles. And Ibn 'Abbas said: Everyone who hunts the sea is a Christian, a Jew, or a Zoroastrian. And Abu al-Darda said: Regarding the *mari*, slaughter the *khamr*, the *naynan*, and the *shams*.

The Shaykh : Now, these narrations mentioned by the author all indicate that sea game is lawful, whether it is alive or dead. So what the sea throws up and casts ashore, such as a dead fish, is lawful, and what we hunt is also lawful. And Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “except for what you find repulsive,” meaning what you yourself find disgusting; so you should not eat it, but it is not forbidden. However, forcing oneself to eat something one finds repulsive is harmful, even from a health perspective, though not from the perspective of the Islamic ruling. And nothing is excluded from this, according to the stronger opinion, due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Lawful to you is game from the sea and its food أحل لكم صيد البحر وطعامه
[Al-Ma'idah 5:96]
. “Game” is a singular noun attached to a definite noun, which indicates generality. As for the *mari*, please give us its explanation.
