The questioner : Is cutting the hair or dyeing it red or yellow forbidden? Knowing that I do not intend to imitate anyone by doing so, but rather I adorn myself for my husband, I hope for an answer from the honorable Shaykh?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment:
This woman asked about cutting the hair, and it appears from the situation that she wants to cut a woman's head hair.
The answer to that is that we say: If a woman cuts her head hair to the extent that it becomes like a man's head hair, then that is forbidden for her, and indeed it is among the major sins, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed the women who imitate men.
And if the cutting does not reach this degree, then if it is a cut that resembles the cuts of the heads of disbelieving women, it is also forbidden, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
And if the cutting does not resemble this or that, the scholars differed on it with three opinions:
The first opinion: That it is forbidden. Some of the followers of Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on them) affirmed this, such as the author of al-Musta'tab.
The second: That it is disliked.
The third: That it is permissible, and safety from cutting is better.
As for dyeing, if it is with a dye specific to the heads of disbelieving women, such that whoever sees this dyed woman would not think anything other than that she is a disbelieving woman, then this is forbidden, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan Abi Dawud 4031Hasan Sahih (Al-Albani).
And if it is a dye that is not specific to disbelieving women, then if it is with black, the apparent ruling is that it is forbidden, unless it is to change white hair, in which case it is forbidden without doubt, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:.
And if it is with another color that is not specific to disbelieving women and is not black, the original ruling is permissibility and lawfulness until evidence of prohibition is established.
So here I point out two important rules:
The first rule: That the original ruling in acts of worship is prohibition, and that no one should worship Allah the Exalted with something from their own mind except with evidence from the Shari'ah that this act is prescribed.
And the second rule: That the original ruling in matters other than acts of worship is permissibility and lawfulness, so no one should forbid something from their own mind except that evidence of prohibition is established.
And these two rules benefit you in many matters in which confusion occurs.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
