The questioner : In Sahih Muslim, there is a hadith to the effect that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to listen to the hand drum or whistling or singing, according to the interpretation of the hadith. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, a conversation took place between them. Abu Bakr said, "Beware of the flutes of Satan in the presence of the Messenger of Allah." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Every nation has a festival, and this is the festival of the Muslims لكل أمة عيد وهذا عيد المسلمين
or something to that effect. I hope you will clarify for us the meaning of this hadith, and is this permissible on the festival days as well?

The Shaykh : The wording used by the questioner is not the hadith narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family); rather, it was the hand drum and singing. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) objected to it, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
This is our festival هذا عيدنا
.
This indicates that there is nothing wrong with the hand drum and singing on the days of the festivals, provided that the singing is pure and does not contain shameful praise, harsh criticism, or vulgar, lowly words. Rather, it is singing that indicates joy and happiness, and the like. This is permissible on the days of the festivals; that is, there is nothing wrong with using the hand drum and singing in the manner we have mentioned.
Another condition is that it must not prevent the performance of the congregational prayer, for example. Because if a permissible thing leads to the abandonment of an obligatory act or the commission of a forbidden act, it becomes forbidden.
