Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling of the Shari'ah, in your view, O honorable Shaykh, regarding weddings where the hand drum is used accompanied by singing by those who strike the drum? Is this considered of the forbidden singing, knowing that it is not accompanied by the use of musical instruments? And if so, what is the ruling on attending such weddings? This has become a fundamental thing in most weddings and cannot be changed. So should a person boycott relatives and not attend these weddings for that reason? Guide us, may Allah reward you.

The Shaykh : Singing at the wedding and striking the hand drum is prescribed, but the singing must be decent.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : It must be free from the vulgar expressions and obscene words that should be avoided. If it is decent singing accompanied only by striking the hand drum, it is what was commanded for the purpose of announcing the marriage, and announcing the marriage is a required matter. But if the words are obscene or the subject of the singing is bad, it is obligatory to leave it, and it is not permissible to attend it, whether it is from relatives, friends, or distant non-friends. If a person fears cutting off family ties, he advises them against this specific singing and says: I have no objection to attending if you leave this singing. If they insist on doing it, he goes and attends. When they start the singing, he leaves. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. This listener, Umm Abdullah, says: O honorable Shaykh.
