What is your advice for the new student of knowledge?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Yes...

The questioner : Your Eminence, we bear witness to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, regarding your love for us in Allah. This is the second point.

The Shaykh : May Allah love you as you have loved us, and make us all among the close friends of Allah. Yes.

The questioner : Your Eminence, what is your advice for the new student of knowledge in seeking knowledge?

The Shaykh : My advice, may Allah bless you,
First, is the sincerity of intention for Allah, Mighty and Majestic. This is the most important thing: that one does not seek in acquiring knowledge anything other than removing ignorance from oneself and from others, and preserving the Shari'ah and defending it. One should not seek fame, nor status, nor a salary.
Second, that one acts upon what he has learned, even if he has only learned one issue in a day, he acts upon it consistently until he benefits. As for accumulating knowledge without action, becoming like a copy of a book, this is mostly what leads to success.
Third: that he chooses a shaykh in whom he trusts regarding his knowledge and his trustworthiness. Both conditions are necessary: his knowledge and his trustworthiness. Because one in whose knowledge you do not trust may speak out of ignorance, and one in whose trustworthiness you do not trust may speak of religious innovations and misguidance, intending thereby to mislead people, may Allah protect us from that. Then he chooses the simplest of the sciences, meaning, if he wants to read jurisprudence, he looks at the concise books in jurisprudence and progresses step by step. Because if a person wants to climb to the roof, how many steps does he take in his first step? Yes, the first is one, then the second, the third, until he reaches the roof. And this is with the success of Allah for the servant. Yes, perhaps you are curing your heedlessness.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : Yes, that is all, you have nothing else.

The questioner : We are listening, O Shaykh, we are listening.

The Shaykh : Very well.
