We said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned eating and drinking because it is the majority, and much of the evidence comes from the Shari'ah in the form of the majority, so why?

The questioner : ... saying that eating and drinking ... the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the majority, meaning ... in eating and drinking, the Lawgiver addresses it in the form of the majority, so why did we make a distinction here ...?

The Shaykh : We may not say this; this is not established. We may not say that this is in the form of the majority unless we know it. But here it is said that eating and drinking contain boasting, arrogance, and showing off that are not present in a person who, for example, has medicine in a room. The display of luxury in eating and drinking is greater than the display of putting medicine in a container, or a document, or something similar.

The questioner : He places it as an ornament but does not eat from it.

The Shaykh : Yes, perhaps he places it as an ornament, but is it like the person who eats and drinks with it? You are now looking at a person who has a cup of gold, but he is placing it. Which is more severe: him, or the one who drinks from it? In terms of the display of luxury, which is it?

The questioner : The second one.

The Shaykh : The second one. So we say the Lawgiver prohibited it because it involves immersion in it, and there is no greater immersion than in eating and drinking. It is not because it is the majority. Then we have the hadith of Umm Salama (may Allah be pleased with her), and she understood the matter.
