The Shaykh : This is because eating and drinking have etiquettes, both practical and verbal. As for the practical etiquettes, one should eat with the right hand and drink with the right hand, and it is not permissible for him to eat with the left hand or drink with the left hand, for this is forbidden according to the stronger opinion, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was punished, may Allah protect us from that. As for the verbal etiquettes, one should mention the name of Allah when eating, saying “Bismillah” (In the name of Allah). The correct view is that mentioning the name of Allah when eating or drinking is obligatory, and a person commits a sin if he does not mention the name of Allah when eating or drinking, because if he does not do so, meaning if he does not mention the name of Allah when eating or drinking, then Shaytan eats with him and drinks with him. For this reason, it is obligatory for a person, when he intends to eat, to mention the name of Allah. If he forgets to mention the name of Allah at the beginning of the food and then remembers in the middle of it, let him say: “Bismillah first and last.” And if one forgets to mention the name of Allah and you are with him, remind him, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reminded 'Umar ibn Abi al-Saltah, who was his foster son, the son of his wife Umm Salimah (may Allah be pleased with her), when he reached for the food and ate. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Bulugh al-Maram 8:98 This contains evidence that when a group is eating, the mention of the name of Allah is required from each person; each person mentions the name of Allah, and it is not sufficient for one person to mention it on behalf of everyone, but every person mentions the name of Allah for himself. These are the verbal etiquettes: mentioning the name of Allah when eating or drinking, and it is obligatory, and it is not permissible for anyone to leave it. As for the etiquettes upon finishing, one should praise Allah, praise Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for this blessing, where He facilitated this eating for him, even though no one is able to facilitate it, as the Exalted said: [Al-Waqi'ah 56:63-64] [Al-Waqi'ah 56:68-69] If it were not that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) caused this crop to grow until it was complete and facilitated it until it reached you, you would have been unable to obtain it. Likewise, water: if it were not that Allah facilitated it by sending it down from the clouds and causing it to flow as springs in the earth until you extracted it, you would not have obtained this. For this reason, He said: He said regarding the crop:
If We willed, We would have made it broken, and you would have been left wondering. And He said regarding water: If We willed, We would have made it bitter. So why do you not give thanks? For this reason, giving thanks for the blessing of Allah upon you with this eating and drinking is to praise Allah when you finish drinking or eating, and this becomes a cause for the pleasure of Allah with you. And his statement: “a mouthful” — the author explained it as the morning meal and the evening meal, meaning it is not every bite; that you say “Alhamdulillah” (Praise be to Allah) every time you eat a bite, or every time you eat a date, is not the case. The Sunnah is to praise Allah once when you finally finish. He mentioned that Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) used to eat and praise Allah for every bite. When he was asked about that, he said: “Eating and praising is better than eating and being silent.” But there is no doubt that the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and that a person, if he praises Allah at the end of his eating or drinking, that is sufficient. But if he sees a benefit, for example, in praising Allah to remind others or the like, I hope there is no harm in that, as Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) did. And Allah grants success. The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He prohibited a man from eating with his left hand or drinking with his left hand, and informed that Shaytan eats with his left hand and drinks with his left hand
And a man ate with his left hand in his presence, so he said: “Eat with your right hand.” He said: “I cannot.” He said: “You will not be able to.” So the man was not able thereafter to raise his right hand to his mouth
Dear child, mention Allah's Name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is next to you.
(63) And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? (64) Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?
(68) And have you seen the water that you drink? (69) Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?
