Explanation of the Book of Foods-08b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu al-Walid narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us from Hisham ibn Zayd, who said:
I entered with Anas upon al-Hakam ibn Ayyub, and he saw some boys or young men who had set up a hen to throw at it. Anas said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tethering animals for target practice. دخلت مع أنس على الحكم بن أيوب فرأى غلماناً أو فتياناً نصبوا دجاجةً يرمونها فقال أنس نهى النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم أن تصبر البهائم

The Shaykh : The tethered animal is the one held back to be thrown at. They used to do this by bringing an animal, a hen, a bird, or something else, and leaving it in front of them as a target, then they would throw at it. This is not permissible because of the torture involved, and because they did not intend to kill it, and because it is not lawful except by ritual slaughter, since it is a creature that can be controlled. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade tethering animals for target practice.
