What is the ruling on adding to the supplication of the witr prayer that was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “O Allah, guide us among those You have guided”?

The questioner : What is the ruling on adding to the supplication of the witr prayer that was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
O Allah, guide us among those You have guided اللهم أهدنا فيمن هديت
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:117
to the end of it, especially continuing to do this addition constantly? Also, when is the supplication of the witr prayer, before the bowing or after it? Please inform us of this.

The Shaykh : Yes, there is no harm in adding to what came from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the qunut of the witr prayer. In fact, it may be inferred from some of the wording of the hadith that what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned is only part of what is said in the qunut of the witr, not all of it. For in some of the wording of the hadith, al-Hasan ibn 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) taught me a supplication with which I supplicate in the qunut of the witr علمني رسول الله صلى الله عليه وعلى آله وسلم دعاء أدعو به في قنوت الوتر
So he said: “I supplicate with it in the qunut of the witr.” It is possible that his saying “in the qunut of the witr” implies that there is a qunut about which al-Hasan ibn 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) did not ask.
This is also indicated by the fact that there is leeway in such a matter: the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) in the talbiyah used to add to what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would say:
Labbaik Allahumma labbaik. Labbaik la sharika laka labbaik. Innal-hamda wan-ni;mata laka wal-mulk, la sharika laka. لبيك اللهم لبيك، لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك إن الحمد والنعمة لك والملك لا شريك لك
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 825Sahih (Darussalam)
And some of the Companions would add to this, and no one among the Companions objected to them.
So what appears from the Sunnah is that as long as the occasion is one of supplication, there is no harm for a person to add to what was reported, provided he does not supplicate for a sin or for severing family ties.
As for his question: Is the qunut before the bowing or after it? A person has a choice; if he wishes, he can make the qunut before the bowing, and if he wishes, he can make it after it. The more common practice is for the qunut to be after the bowing.
