Explanation of the Book of the Hearts-03b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Al-‘Abd al-‘Aziz ibn ‘Abd Allah narrated to us, al-Sulayman narrated to us, from Musa ibn ‘Uqbah, from Abu Salama ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman, from ‘A’ishah, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little. سددوا وقاربوا واعلموا أن لن يدخل أحدكم عمله الجنة وأن أحب الأعمال أدومها إلى الله وإن قل
Sahih al-Bukhari 6464
.

The Shaykh : Yes, this hadith, as you see, has some awkwardness in its wording, and this is undoubtedly from the narrator. He said, “Be correct and be near,” just as he said in the first part, “Be correct and be near.” The meaning of “be correct” (tassid) is hitting the target, and “be near” (muqarabah) means approaching the truth; that is, perform the deed in its complete form if possible, or come close to it if not possible. This is because Allah the Exalted says:
So fear Allah as much as you are able فاتقوا الله ما استطعتم
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
And His saying:
and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little. واعلموا أنه لن يدخل أحدكم عمله الجنة وأن أحب الأعمال أدومها إلى الله وإن قل
Sahih al-Bukhari 6464
The correct wording is:
And that the most beloved deeds to Allah are the most consistent ones, even if they are few. وأن أحب الأعمال إلى الله أدومها وإن قل
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 67:49
But here, the verb and its object are separated. However, the other wordings clarify that this wording has some disturbance in it, but it does not harm, as long as the outcome is the same, it is understood according to the wording that has no ambiguity.
