Sahih al-Bukhari 3329
Adn عدن
: Eternal abode. "I made my abode in a land": I resided, and from this comes the word "minad" (deposit)
In a place of truthful growth في معدن صدق

The reader: ...

The Shaykh : In our copy it is "minad" (deposit), and in another copy it is "maq'ad" (place of sitting).
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) explained "Adn" as residence, so the meaning of "Gardens of Adn" is gardens of residence with no departure. And if the residence involves no departure, it is an eternal residence. This is how the two explanations came about: he said "Adn is eternal abode," and this is the intended meaning; and "Adn in the land is to reside." This is the literal explanation, because an explanation can be a literal explanation of the word, or an explanation of the intended meaning. For this reason, we say, for example, "residence means such-and-such, and the intended meaning is such-and-such." This happens frequently in exegesis; you find some exegetes explaining a word by its literal form and then saying, "and the intended meaning is such-and-such." But this is not a case of distortion; this is not a case of distortion. It is a matter of the meaning indicated by the context. The literal explanation is the one by which you explain the word as a word, regardless of its context.
