Explanation of the Book of Inheritance, Fixed Punishments, and Blood Money-05a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Yahya ibn Bukayr narrated to us, al-Layth narrated to me, saying: Khalid ibn Yazid narrated to me from Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal from Zayd ibn Aslam from his father from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab:
During the lifetime of the Prophet (ﷺ) there was a man called `Abdullah whose nickname was Donkey, and he used to make Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) laugh. The Prophet (ﷺ) lashed him because of drinking (alcohol). And one-day he was brought to the Prophet (ﷺ) on the same charge and was lashed. On that, a man among the people said, "O Allah, curse him ! How frequently he has been brought (to the Prophet (ﷺ) on such a charge)!" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Do not curse him, for by Allah, I know for he loves Allah and His Apostle."
Sahih al-Bukhari 6780
.

The Shaykh : Now, this man's name was 'Abdullah and he was nicknamed al-Himmar, meaning they would say, "O al-Himmar." But does he accept this nickname or not? If he accepts it, there is no harm; but if he does not accept it, it is forbidden. This is what the evidence indicates. You know that the word "donkey" in that era could be used as a name for a man; it has passed by you: 'Iyad ibn al-Himmar.
Now, he used to make the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) laugh. From this, it is understood that there is no harm in a man laughing when he sees a person, whether due to his lightness, his joking, or something similar.
