The reciter: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Hammad narrated to us from Ayub from Abu Qilabah from Anas ibn Malik: .
Abu Qilabah said:Sahih al-Bukhari 233.
The Shaykh : This hadith, with all its chains and contexts, the story is that a group of people, seven or eight or six, came to al-Madinah and suffered from the climate, meaning they settled in its atmosphere and fell ill there. It was known that camel urine benefits from this illness, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to join the zakat camels and drink from their urine and milk until they recovered. When they recovered, they exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief; they killed the shepherd after mutilating him and gouging out his eyes. Gouging out the eyes means that nails are heated by fire until they are like embers, then the eyes are anointed with them until they burst. They did this, then they took the camels and left.
That reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he sent a search party for them. Before the day had risen, they were brought to him, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that their hands and feet be cut off from opposite sides, and their eyes be gouged out, and they be thrown into the volcanic area, asking for water, meaning seeking water, but not being given any, until they died.
These people, as Abu Qilabah said, apostatized after their Islam, killed the shepherd and mutilated him, and gouged out his eyes, as that came in another narration other than Sahih al-Bukhari. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did with them what he did, because this is the requirement of prudence[An-Nahl 16:126].
And likewise, it is obligatory for the one in authority to punish those who transgress, because if people were left to their transgression, they would transgress from the small to the large, and from the large to the larger. So if they are deterred, it becomes a deterrent for them and for others.
Otherwise, one might say: How can it be mercy that a group is thrown into the volcanic area, asking for water but not being given any, until they die?
We say: Yes, because they did that to the shepherd, so they exchanged the favor of Allah for disbelief, so they are deserving of this great punishment that occurred from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and by his order.
So the author (may Allah have mercy on him) brought this hadith alone, as if he wants to say: The reward for those who fight against Allah and His Messenger is only those who apostatized after their Islam, and they are not highway robbers.
That a group from 'Ukl, or he said: 'Uraynah, and I do not know it except that he said: from 'Ukl, came to al-Madinah, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered for them camels, and ordered them to go out and drink from their urine and milk, so they drank until when they were cured, they killed the shepherd, and drove off the camels, so that reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the morning, so he sent a search party after them, so before the day had risen, they were brought to him, so he ordered that their hands and feet be cut off and their eyes be gouged out, so they were thrown into the volcanic area, asking for water but not being given any
Abu Qilabah said:
Those people committed theft and murder, became infidels after embracing Islam and fought against Allah and His Apostle

And if you punish [an enemy, O believers], punish with an equivalent of that with which you were harmed
