The reciter: Muhammad ibn Uthman ibn Karamah narrated to us, Khalid ibn Makhlad narrated to us from Sulayman, Abdullah ibn Dinar narrated to me from Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:
The Shaykh : The author’s statement: “The chapter on stoning at the paved area.” The paved area is well known; it is the ground covered with baked stone tiles, and it is still called a paved area among us today.
Regarding stoning at the paved area, some have said that the meaning is stoning with the stones of the paved area, but this is incorrect, because he said: “stoning at the paved area.” The preposition “in” (fi) here indicates location, not transitivity. Furthermore, in this hadith of Ibn Umar, he said: “They were stoned at the paved area,” which is explicit that the paved area refers to the stone tiles that cover the ground, i.e., the ground is paved with them. This is an indication that the person to be stoned is not dug into, because the custom is that one does not dig into a paved area.
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was brought a Jewish man and a Jewish woman who had committed unlawful sexual intercourse. He said to them: “What do you find in your Scripture?” They said: “Our rabbis have innovated the practice of branding the face and blinding.” Abdullah ibn Salam said: “O Messenger of Allah, summon them with the Torah.” It was brought, and one of them placed his hand over the verse of stoning and began to read what came before it and what came after it. Ibn Salam said to him: “Lift your hand,” and there was the verse of stoning under his hand. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that they be stoned, and they were stoned. Ibn Umar said: “They were stoned at the paved area, and I saw the Jewish man straddling her.”
