Al-Layth said: Abu al-Aswad narrated to us, saying: قطع على أهل المدينة بعث فاكتتبت فيه فلقيت عكرمة فأخبرته فنهاني أشد النهي قال أخبرني ابن عباس أن أناسًا من المسلمين كانوا مع المشركين يكثرون سواد المشركين على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فيأتي السهم فيرمى فيصيب أحدهم فيقتله أو يضربه فيقتله فأنزل الله تعالى : إن الذين توفاهم الملائكة ظالمي أنفسهم A military expedition was sent out from the people of Madinah, so I enlisted in it. Then I met Ikrimah and informed him of this, and he forbade me from it with the strongest prohibition. He said: Ibn Abbas informed me that a group of Muslims were with the polytheists, increasing the number of the polytheists against the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). An arrow would come and be thrown, hitting one of them, killing him or wounding him fatally. So Allah the Exalted revealed: "Indeed, those whom the angels take [in death] while wronging themselves...".
