Explanation of the Book of Fitnahs and Rulings-03b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: Al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Adam ibn Abi Iyas narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us from Wasil al-Ahdab from Abu Wa'il from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman, who said:
The hypocrites of today are worse than those of the lifetime of the Prophet, because in those days they used to do evil deeds secretly but today they do such deeds openly. إن المنافقين اليوم شر منهم على عهد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم كانوا يومئذ يسرون واليوم يجهرون
Sahih al-Bukhari 7113
.

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The apparent meaning of this hadith may be difficult to understand. The hypocrites in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to conceal; what did they conceal? They concealed disbelief and declared faith. But now he says: "they are open about it today". It is well known that a hypocrite conceals and does not be open. If they are being open, where is the hypocrisy? His words (may Allah be pleased with him) must be understood to mean that they are open with some people and conceal from others, or that they are open about some of the blameworthy matters while concealing others. His words must be understood in this way, because one who is open is not a hypocrite.
