The Shaykh : In any case, there is a difference in the wording in our texts, but this one contains the disparagement of the one whom Allah has entrusted with a group of people and who does not give them sincere advice, or advise them, that he will not smell the fragrance of Paradise. And this advice is more specific than the general advice about which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 4197Sahih (Darussalam). This is because the guardian of something is asked about it with a direct, specific question. Therefore, we give the example of the imam of the mosque; if he prayed alone, he would be permitted to pray.
That 'Ubayd Allah ibn Ziyad visited Ma'qil ibn Yasar during the illness in which he died, and Ma'qil said to him, "I am telling you a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'There is no servant whom Allah has entrusted with a group of people, but who does not give them sincere advice, who will smell the fragrance of Paradise.'"
