If the jurists say that his prayer is not valid, does that mean his prayer is invalid and he must repeat it, such as if he prays behind someone who makes a mistake in al-Fatihah that distorts the meaning?

The Shaykh : Please, go ahead.

The questioner : May Allah reward you, O Shaykh. If the jurists say in a matter: "It is not valid," for example, regarding the prayer that it is not valid, or "it is obligatory," does this mean that if he neglects this obligation, he must repeat it? For example, their statement: If one who recites al-Fatihah correctly prays behind an imam who makes a mistake in it that distorts the meaning, his prayer is not valid. Does this mean he must repeat it or not?

The Shaykh : Yes, if one who recites al-Fatihah correctly prays behind someone who does not recite it correctly, and he knows that the imam's prayer is not valid, then it is known that his prayer is invalid and he must repeat it. However, if he was ignorant and he—the follower—recited al-Fatihah correctly, his prayer is valid. If he was ignorant and did not know, and he recited al-Fatihah, his prayer is valid.
