The questioner : O Shaykh, what is the standard for the Sunnah in entering upon the family on the night of the celebration? It has been confusing for many people because they mentioned that one should recite Surat al-Baqarah and pray. Is this the custom now among many people?
The Shaykh : Yes, when a man enters upon his wife, the first thing he does is take hold of the front of her head and say:Sunan Ibn Majah 2252Hasan (Darussalam) However, if he fears that the woman will be upset if he takes hold of the front of her head and says this supplication, he can take hold of the front of her head as if he wants to kiss her, for example, and say this dhikr to himself without her hearing it. He says it with his tongue and pronounces it, but without her hearing it so that she is not upset. As for if she is a woman seeking knowledge who knows that this is prescribed, there is no harm in him letting her hear it.
As for praying two rak'ahs when he enters the room where the wife is, it is reported from some of the Salaf that they used to do this. If a person does it, it is good, and if he does not do it, there is no harm on him. As for reciting Surat al-Baqarah or other surahs, I do not know any basis for it.

Allahumma inni as'aluka khairaha wa khaira ma jabaltaha alaihi, wa a'udhu bika min sharriha wa sharri ma jabaltaha alaihi (O Allah, I ask You for the goodness within her and the goodness that You have made her inclined towards, and I seek refuge with You from the evil within her and the evil that You have made her inclined towards)
