The questioner : The question asks whether it is permissible for a person to pray the obligatory prayer with an imam who is praying a voluntary prayer, such as praying the 'Isha' prayer while the imam is praying the tarawih prayer or any other voluntary prayer. Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good in this world and the bliss of the Hereafter?

The Shaykh : Yes, it is permissible for a person to pray the obligatory prayer behind one who is praying a voluntary prayer. So, if you come on the days of Ramadan and you have missed the 'Isha' prayer, and the imam is praying the tarawih prayer, you may join him with the intention of praying 'Isha'. When he finishes the tarawih prayer, you make up what you missed of it; you make up what you missed, meaning you complete the four rak'ahs of the 'Isha' prayer.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : This is the stronger position, because Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray the 'Isha' prayer with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), then he would return to his people and pray that prayer with them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And this was during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), where it was a voluntary prayer for him and an obligatory prayer for them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : However, if you enter with a group of people and you have all missed the 'Isha' prayer, and the imam is praying the tarawih prayer, the preferred option is for you to pray with them as a group away from the other worshippers, so that you do not disturb them and they do not disturb you. But if you are alone, the best option is to join the imam in the tarawih prayer.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : This message reached us from Sudan from Hamed Ahmad Qadisi in Sudan.
