The Shaykh : This hadith passed by us, and we clarified that it contains no evidence for the argument of the people of sins using divine decree. That is because 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) excused himself regarding a past matter, and excusing oneself regarding a past matter by citing divine decree is permissible, because a person sometimes slips and commits a sin or leaves an obligatory act, then he regrets and repents, and then he cites divine decree, saying, “We complain to Allah; Allah decreed such and such upon me,” and there is no harm in this. The danger lies in the one who persists in sins and makes this argument a justification for his continuation in sin; that is the danger. Accordingly, Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) interpreted the hadith of the argument of Adam and Moses by saying that Adam only cited divine decree regarding a sin from which he had repented and regretted, so the blame was lifted from him, and nothing remained but pure…? Pure divine decree, because when he repented to Allah and turned back, and the blame was lifted from him by this repentance, nothing remained but the decree. As for his Shaykh (may Allah have mercy on him), he interpreted the hadith of the argument of Adam and Moses by saying that Adam did not cite divine decree regarding his eating from the tree, but rather cited divine decree regarding his being expelled from Paradise, and this is what Moses (peace be upon him) objected to when he said Sunan Abi Dawud 4702Hasan (Al-Albani). In any case, both answers are correct: the answer of Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) when he said “This is in the category of citing divine decree regarding calamities, not regarding defects”, and likewise the answer of his student Ibn al-Qayyim that if this is after repentance and returning to Allah, then there is no harm in it. Perhaps the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) Sunan al-Bayhaqi 17:1080 bears witness to this. Yes.
