The Shaykh : This hadith is evidence that a person should not continue praying if he begins the prayer and sleep overtakes him; rather, he should stop. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to sit down. He said: meaning, let him stop the prayer, because he may be praying while drowsy, intending to praise Allah but saying something other than what he intended, or intending to make a supplication for himself but ending up cursing himself. Therefore, if sleep comes to you, sleep. However, if someone says, “Only the witr rak'ah remains for me, and sleep has come to me; should I sit down and let the time for witr pass, or what should I do?” We say: If you can energize yourself by splashing water on your face or the like, and pray this single rak'ah, that is better than letting it be lost. Otherwise, sit down and make it up later as an even-numbered prayer. Allahu Akbar.
The reciter: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon His servant and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
Imam Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him) said.
Let him sit down
