Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : This hadith contains several benefits, among which is the permissibility of a woman offering herself to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); if he accepts her, the marriage contract is completed. However, this is specific to him, based on the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He)
and a believing woman وامرأة مؤمنة
meaning, We have made lawful to you a believing woman
if she gives herself to the Prophet إن وهبت نفسها للنبي
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
meaning, to you. He made it explicit in a place where it could have been implied, out of respect for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and to indicate the aspect of his uniqueness, which is that he is a Prophet.
if she gives herself to the Prophet [and] if the Prophet wishes to marry her إن وهبت نفسها للنبي إن أراد النبي أن يستنكحها
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
meaning, if you wish. He also made it explicit in a place where it could have been implied, out of respect for the status of prophethood.
[this is] only for you, excluding the [other] believers خالصة لك من دون المؤمنين
[Al-Ahzab 33:50]
meaning, this ruling is specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and not to the believers. So this woman came to offer herself to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he did not rebuke her, because that is an application of the noble verse. Thus, in this hadith, there is the permissibility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) marrying a woman through her offer, but this is what? It is specific to him. Among the benefits of this hadith is the good character of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for when he raised his gaze to look at her, then lowered it, he bowed his head and did not decide anything regarding her. He did not embarrass her by saying, "I do not want you," nor did he accept her because he did not want her, and a person is not forced to do something he does not want. From this is the virtue of this woman who came to offer herself to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), for she did not offer herself to him except for what she hoped for in his proximity, in terms of religious and worldly benefits. Among the benefits of this hadith is the good etiquette of the Companions with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), where the man said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you have no need for her, then marry me to her." He did not simply say, "Marry me to her," because it was possible that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had not decided anything and was still thinking. So it was part of this man's etiquette to say, "If you have no need for her, then marry me to her." Also, among the etiquettes of the Companions with the Messenger are many stories, including the story of Dhu al-Yadayn, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded the prayer with the taslim after two rak'ahs in the Dhuhr or 'Asr prayer, and Dhu al-Yadayn said to him
Have you forgotten or shortened the prayer? He said, I have not forgotten and it has not been shortened أنسيت أم قصرت الصلاة؟ فقال لم أنس ولم تقصر
Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:673
, and there are many similar instances. Among the benefits of this hadith is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has the right to contract the marriage of a woman even if she has guardians, based on the saying of the Exalted
The Prophet is more worthy of the believers than themselves النبي أولى بالمؤمنين من أنفسهم
[Al-Ahzab 33:6]
. For this reason, the man asked the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to marry him to her, and he did so without asking if she had a guardian or not. This indicates that among the characteristics of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is that he marries women without asking about the guardians. Do the judges, princes, and caliphs share in this? The answer is no. These people are in the last position if there is no guardianship by lineage or manumission; then they marry her. But if there is a relative who is a guardian, then the judge, the prince, or the caliph has no right to marry her. However, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is more worthy of the believers than themselves. Among the benefits of this hadith is that the marriage contract is not valid except with a mahr, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized to this man to bring a mahr. Among the benefits of this hadith is that it is recommended for a person not to judge something by negation or affirmation until after verification, for this man asked, "Do you have anything?" He said, "No." He said, "Go to your family and see if you find anything," and he did not suffice with his saying "no," because perhaps…
