Benefits of the Hadith: (… that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Abu: “Indeed, Allah has commanded me to recite to you.” He said: “By Allah, did He name you for me?…

The Shaykh : In this is evidence for principles of jurisprudence and issues of fiqh. As for the issues of fiqh, they are what the translator headed as: it is permissible for the superior to recite to the inferior, just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the Qur'an to Abu ibn Ka'b by the command of Allah. As for the principles of jurisprudence, there is evidence in it that Allah the Exalted speaks whenever He wills, however He wills, with what He wills. These are three generalities. “Whenever He wills” refers to what?
The student: The time.

The Shaykh : It refers to the time. “With what He wills” refers to the subject of the speech. “However He wills” refers to how He speaks. All of this is what the people of the Sunnah followed, and they said that Allah the Exalted speaks whenever He wills, with what He wills, however He wills. His speech (Mighty and Majestic) is an essential attribute in terms of its origin, for He has always been and will always be a Speaker. And it is an attribute of action in terms of its instances, for He speaks with what He wills, whenever He wills, however He wills.
In it is also among the benefits the virtue of Abu ibn Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), in that Allah named him and commanded His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to recite to him.
In it is also among the benefits that a person may sometimes weep from joy. And this indicates that a person’s being affected by something, whether with sadness or joy, leads to.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Weeping. And it may be said that he wept in awe of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) because He honored him with this great honor, which Allah commanded His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to do. If someone asks, why was this Surah singled out? That is, He did not command him to recite al-Fatihah to him, nor the Verse of the Throne, nor anything else. Why? We say that this Surah speaks about the People of the Book, so it was fitting that Abu hear it to be a confirmation of what is in it. And in this Surah, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell
[Al-Bayyinah 98:6]
How do we understand the meaning of “from” in His saying
from the People of the Scripture
[Al-Baqarah 2:105]
? Is it for partiality or for specification, specification of the genus?
The student: The first.
Another student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : If we say
Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture
[Al-Bayyinah 98:6]
that
Who من
is for specification, the meaning becomes that all the People of the Book are disbelievers. And there is no doubt in this after the sending of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), if they did not believe in him. And if we say it is general for the People of the Book who were before the Messenger and those in his time, then it becomes here for partiality, because whoever was a believer among the People of the Book is not in the Hellfire. As for His saying
and the polytheists والمشركين
, this is conjoined to
Those who disbelieved
, it is not conjoined to
Offered أهل
, and that is because there is no believer among the polytheists. And thus the “wa” (and) is a letter of conjunction, and “the polytheists” is conjoined to.
The student:
Those who disbelieved
.

The Shaykh :
Those who disbelieved
meaning, and the polytheists are in the Hellfire, abiding therein. And in the Surah there is a question: Why was the praise of the believers mentioned before the mention of the reward, and the reward mentioned before the praise regarding the disbelievers? He said regarding the disbelievers
Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.
[Al-Bayyinah 98:6]
and regarding the believers
(7) Indeed, they who have believed and done righteous deeds - those are the best of creatures. (8) Their reward with Allah will be gardens of perpetual residence beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever, Allah being pleased with them and they with Him. That is for whoever has feared his Lord.
[Al-Bayyinah 98:7-8]
? It is said, and Allah knows best, that this has two benefits. The first benefit is linguistic, which is the length of the mention of the reward for the believers, so it was fitting that it be the last of the speech so that it not be separated from the mention of the rank by a long interval. And the second is that the praise of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for them is more beloved to them than anything, more beloved to them than the reward. And for this reason, the looking at the Face of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) in Paradise, may Allah make us and you among those who look at it.
The student: Amen.

The Shaykh : is the highest pleasure of the people of Paradise. They do not see a pleasure more delightful for their hearts and more secret than the looking at the Face of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). As for those disbelievers, their reward was mentioned first because of the brevity of the speech about it, and because it is a stronger deterrent for the listener, for the most deterrent thing for a disbeliever is that he be punished. As for whether he is praised or not praised, it may not be of importance. This is what has become apparent to us, and Allah knows best the ruling of His Book.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Okay, what?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : He said “By Allah,” meaning yes, “By Allah.”
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Its original form, but the hamza of interrogation is deleted at the beginning, … with a hamza of connection, like
Is Allah better or what they associate with Him?" ءالله خير أمّا يشركون
[An-Naml 27:59]
, “By Allah, did He command you to do that?” Yes.

The questioner : Shaykh?

The Shaykh : Yes, yes, Salim?
