Benefits of the Hadith: (… From 'Abdullah, he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: “Read the Qur'an to me.” He said: So I said)

The Shaykh : It also contains evidence for the permissibility of requesting recitation from the less proficient, and this happens often, that a person likes to hear the Qur'an from someone else, and therefore you find him becoming more humble when he hears the recitation from another than if he recited it himself. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud to read to him, and he said, “Shall I read to you while it was revealed to you?” The sentence here is interrogative, and the implied meaning is “Shall I read to you?” The interrogation here is for wonder, not for seeking information, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was knowledgeable about that, knowledgeable that the Qur'an was revealed to him and that he had asked 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud to read, but it was for wonder: how shall I read to you while it was revealed to you? So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explained the wisdom of that, that he desired or loved to hear it from another, so he read to him from Surat al-Nisa until he reached this verse
So how [will it be] when We bring from every nation a witness and we bring you, [O Muhammad] against these [people] as a witness? فكيف إذا جئنا من كل أمة بشهيد وجئنا بك على هؤلاء شهيدا
[An-Nisa 4:41]
. The person who visualizes this scene is certainly struck with terror and fear, and for this reason the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) excused himself, saying, “A witness as long as I am among them,” just as 'Isa (peace be upon him) said
And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness. وكنت شهيدا عليهم ما دمت فيهم فلما توفيتني كنت أنت الرقيب عليهم وأنت على كل شيء شهيد
[Al-Ma'idah 5:117]
. The “how” here is an interrogation for magnification and glorification, meaning how great the situation is at that time when we bring a witness from every nation, and you visualize every nation kneeling, every nation being called to its book, every nation’s witnesses being called; visualize the situation, it is a great situation. The point is that this indicates the permissibility of requesting recitation from one who is lower in status than the requester, and it also contains evidence that if a person says to the reciter, “Stop the recitation” or “Enough” or “That is sufficient” or the like, there is no harm in it, and this is not considered disdain for the Qur'an, but a person has different states. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Enough,” and 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud stopped. From that, if a person is listening to a recorded tape containing the Qur'an and then wants to play with another task and turns off the tape, there is no harm, and it is not said that this is disdain for the Qur'an or a desire to turn away from it, because every station has its appropriate response.
