The reciter: Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, saying: Jarir narrated to us from al-A'mash from Ibrahim from 'Uqbay from 'Abdullah, who said:
I was in Homs, and some of the people said to me: "Read to us." So I read Surat Yusuf to them. A man from among them said: "By Allah, it was not revealed this way." I said: "Woe to you! By Allah, I read it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to me: 'You have done well.' While I was speaking with him, I smelled the scent of intoxicants on him. I said: 'Do you drink intoxicants and deny the Book? You will not leave until I flog you.' So I flogged him with the prescribed punishment. كنت بحمص فقال لي بعض القوم: اقرأ علينا فقرأت عليهم سورة يوسف قال: فقال رجل من القوم: والله ما هكذا أنزلت قال: قلت: ويحك والله لقد قرأتها على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال لي: أحسنت فبينما أنا أكلمه إذ وجدت منه ريح الخمر قال: فقلت : أتشرب الخمر وتكذب بالكتاب؟ لا تبرح حتى أجلدك قال: فجلدته الحد
