What is the ruling on naming one of the sons after the father?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Shaykh, may Allah reward you. What is your opinion on a man naming one of his sons after himself, for example, if Abdullah ibn Umar were to name a son Abdullah?

The Shaykh : It is permissible.

The questioner : There is no problem with its permissibility, but do you not see that it is recommended because he named him with one of the names most beloved to Allah?

The Shaykh : No, we do not see it as recommended, but we see it as permissible. It is well known that when a man dies and his wife is pregnant, they name the child in her womb after his father. It is not customary for a person to be named after his father except in such a case. This is clearer; it is clearer and more distinct to be named after another person. Because if he is named after his father, it is necessary to mention the grandfather's name when stating his lineage, so it would be said, for example, Abdullah ibn Abdullah ibn Umar.
