Continuation of the explanation: (Then he proceeded to the Station of Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and recited, "And take the Station of Ibrahim as a place of prayer." So he placed the Station between himself and the House. Then my father used to say—and I do not know that he mentioned it except from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)—that he would recite in the two rak'ahs, "Say: He is Allah, the One" and "Say: O you disbelievers." Then he returned to the Corner and touched it. Then he went out of the door to al-Safa. When he approached al-Safa, he recited, "Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah." I begin with what Allah began with, so I began with al-Safa. He climbed it until he saw the House. He faced the qiblah, so he declared the oneness of Allah and magnified Him, saying, "There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things. There is no god but Allah alone, who fulfilled His promise and gave victory to His servant and defeated the confederates alone." Then he made du'a between that. He said, "He did this three times." Then he descended to al-Marwah. When his feet were upright in the valley, he hurried. When he ascended, he walked until he reached al-Marwah. He did on al-Marwah what he did on al-Safa. When he finished his tawaf on al-Marwah, he said, "If I had known what I know now, I would not have brought the sacrificial animals and would have made it an 'Umrah. So whoever among you does not have sacrificial animals, let him exit the state of ihram and make it an 'Umrah." So Sarraqah ibn Malik ibn Ju'ashm stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this for this year only or forever?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) interlaced his fingers, one in the other, and said, "'Umrah has entered into Hajj twice. No, but forever, forever.")

The Shaykh : And his statement: "He climbed it until he saw the House." This climbing is not obligatory; rather, it is a recommended practice. Otherwise, if one stands at the boundary of al-Safa from the bottom, the objective is achieved, due to the statement of the Exalted:
So there is no blame on him if he circumambulates them both, and whoever reaches them both has circumambulated them both فلا جناح عليه أن يطوف بهما، ومن وصل إلى بهما فقد اطوف بهما
The obligatory limit now is the boundary of these poles they have set for the women. So this is the obligatory limit. Accordingly, it is not obligatory to ascend and move forward, especially on days of crowding.
And in it also: that it is recommended to face the qiblah on al-Safa, declare the oneness of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and magnify Him.
And his statement:
There is no god but Allah وقال : لا إله إلا الله
Sahih Muslim 1218a
It is possible that this is an addition to his statement "So he
and declared the oneness of Allah وحد الله
," or that it is an explanation of it. But the Sunnah has come that he magnifies Allah three times. However, it is not like the takbir of the funeral prayer, as some of the common people imagine, where they say
Allahu Akbar. الله أكبر
with their hands, gesturing with them as they gesture in prayer. This is an error. But he raises his hands and magnifies Allah three times.
And he says:
There is no god but Allah, alone, without any partner. To Him belong the Kingdom and praise, and He has power over everythingلا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير
Muwatta Malik 20:131
There is no god but Allah alone, Who fulfilled His promise, helped His servant and routed the confederates alone. لا إله إلا الله وحده أنجز وعده ونصرعبده وهزم الأحزاب وحده
Sahih Muslim 1218a
,
who fulfilled His promise أنجز وعده
With what? It is the statement of the Exalted:
You will surely enter al-Masjid al-Haram, if Allah wills, in safety, with your heads shaved and [hair] shortened لتدخلن المسجد الحرام إن شاء الله آمنين محلقين رءوسكم ومقصرين
[Al-Fath 48:27]
.
And He supported His servant. ونصر عبده
Where Makkah was under his authority after it had been under the authority of the polytheists.
And He defeated the confederates alone. وهزم الأحزاب وحده
Is the intended meaning of "defeated the confederates" what happened in the Year of the Trench, or is it more general? The second, what is more general.
And his statement:
He then made supplication in the course of that saying such words three times. ثم دعا بين ذلك ، قال مثل هذا ثلاث مرات
Sahih Muslim 1218a
So he says this dhikr, then makes du'a, then says it again and makes du'a, then says it again and then descends. Because he said: "He did this three times." As for the du'a, he said, "He made du'a between that." And if we apply the wording to the implication of its meaning, it becomes dhikr, then du'a, then dhikr, then du'a, then dhikr. So that makes five, then he descends.
And in it also: that he descends walking, not running in the first three laps like in tawaf, because the sa'y area is far and it is difficult for people. But he walks a normal walk. However, he says:
and when his feet came down in the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he began to ascend he walked حتى إذا انصبت قدماه في بطن الوادي سعى ، حتى إذا صعدتا مشى
Sahih Muslim 1218a
The valley means the bed of the stream, which is the flowing water. And in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the stream was between us. And it is customary that the stream—meaning the stream of the floods—be descending. For this reason, the Prophet hurried in it with great effort, until his lower garment would turn around him from the intensity of the hurrying.
And the origin of that is that when the mother of Isma'il, when her husband Ibrahim (peace and blessings be upon him) left her and her son, when her master or her husband left her? Both. He left them in Makkah and left with them a sack of dates and a waterskin of water. The dates and water ran out. The mother became hungry and thirsty, and the child would become hungry after that, because there was no milk for his mother. The boy began to cry and shout, and she had no one with her, she had no one but Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So she saw the nearest mountain to her, climbed it, and felt around, hoping she might hear someone. She did not hear anyone, so she descended from al-Safa to the nearest mountain to her after al-Safa, which is al-Marwah. She did the same, standing on it and feeling around, hoping she might hear someone. But in the valley, she was hurrying with great speed, fearing for her son, because if she descended, she would be hidden from him, so she was hurrying with great speed. When she completed seven laps, Jibril descended and struck the ground with his wing or his foot, until water gushed out from its place and became like a flowing river. So she surrounded it, may Allah be pleased with her, out of greed for it, from the intensity of her compassion for him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
May Allah be merciful to the mother of Ishmael! If she had left the water of Zamzam (fountain) as it was, (without constructing a basin for keeping the water), (or said, "If she had not taken handfuls of its water"), it would have been a flowing stream. يرحم الله أم إسماعيل لو تركت زمزم لكانت عينًا معينًا
Sahih al-Bukhari 2368
, but there is no doubt that this is the wisdom, from the wisdom of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). And the aspect of that is that if it had been a specific spring in this place and near the Ka'bah, it would have caused difficulty for people. But from the grace of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is that the matter became as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) willed.
So this is the origin of sa'y, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Therefore, people performed sa'y. So it is recommended for you, while you are performing sa'y, to feel that you are in dire need of the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), just as this woman was in dire need of the mercy of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So it is as if you are calling upon Him (Glorified and Exalted is He) for aid from the effects of sins and their ailments. Now, this dhikr is said at the beginning of every lap. Accordingly, if one finishes the last lap from al-Marwah, there is no du'a, because this du'a is only at the beginning of the lap. Just as that is also the case in tawaf, where the takbir is at the beginning of the lap, not at its end.
And in it also: at the end of the tawaf, he said:
had I known before hand about my affair what I have come to know later لو أني استقبلت من أمري من استدبرت
Sunan Abi Dawud 1789Sahih (Al-Albani)
And the speech on this phrase has preceded.
