The questioner : O esteemed Shaykh, what is the ruling on hunting in the Sacred Precinct of the Prophet?

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : What is the ruling on hunting in the Sacred Precinct of the Prophet?

The Shaykh : The correct view is that it is forbidden, but it is not like hunting in the Sacred Precinct of Makkah. If a person hunts in the Sacred Precinct of Makkah, his sin is greater than if he hunts in the Sacred Precinct of Madinah. There is no expiation for hunting in the Sacred Precinct of Madinah, whereas there is an expiation for hunting in the Sacred Precinct of Makkah. If a person brings game into the Sacred Precinct of Madinah from outside the precinct, he may keep it and slaughter it. There is scholarly disagreement regarding the Sacred Precinct of Makkah: some scholars say that if a person brings game into the Sacred Precinct of Makkah, he must release it, while others say he is not required to do so. The correct view is that he is not required to release it. If a person brings a rabbit or a pigeon from outside the precinct into the precinct, he may keep it and slaughter it because it is his property. This is different from if he hunts it within the precinct, in which case he may not keep it or slaughter it; rather, he must release it. Yes.

The questioner : May Allah reward you and bless you.
