The Book of Marriage, Breastfeeding, Divorce, Mutual Oath-Swearing, and Manumission-07b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Ubayd Allah ibn Ma'dh narrated to us, saying: My father narrated to us, saying: Shu'bah narrated to us from Muharrab from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah, who said:
I married a woman, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "Have you married?" I said: "Yes." He said: "A virgin or a previously married woman?" I said: "A previously married woman." He said: "What about the virgins and their playfulness?" تزوجت امرأة فقال لي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: هل تزوجت، قلت نعم قال: أبكرا أم ثيبا، قلت ثيبا قال: فأين أنت من العذارى ولعابها
, Shu'bah said: I mentioned this to 'Amr ibn Dinar, and he said: I heard it from Jabir, and he only said
Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you could sport with her and she could sport with you فهلا جارية تلاعبها وتلاعبك
Sahih Muslim 715f
.

The Shaykh : The author presented this hadith with different wordings. Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) married this woman after his father was martyred at Uhud. He had sisters, so he married a previously married woman to take care of these sisters and to prevent him from being separated from them, because if he had married a virgin, he might have been distracted by her from his sisters. Therefore, he chose a previously married woman for this purpose. Accordingly, this constitutes a fifth purpose, which is that a man marries a woman to raise his children.
