Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : If a man greets a person and another man hears it, is it obligatory for him to return the greeting?

The Shaykh : If a person greets a man, it is not obligatory for the other to return the greeting to him, because he was not the intended recipient of the greeting. However, if he greets the group in general, then the return of the greeting by one of them is sufficient, because returning the greeting is a collective obligation (fard kifayah) and not an individual obligation (fard 'ayn). The scholars said: If a man enters upon a group and greets them while intending one specific person among them, because that person is the eldest among them, then it is obligatory for that person who was intended by the greeting to return it, even if someone else returns it, because it is apparent that the one greeting intended that specific elder. Yes.
