Explanation: And he recited: “And [mention,] when David and Solomon were judging concerning the garden when the people’s sheep had grazed in it during the night, and We were witnesses to their judgment. So We gave Solomon understanding, and to each of them We gave judgment and knowledge”

The Shaykh : And al-Hasan recited: [Al-Anbya 21:78-79] “grazed in it during the night.” Al-nafsh means grazing at night. And he did not say “to their two judgments,” and that is because the judgment encompasses several matters: the judge, the one being judged, and the matter being judged. Here, the judges are two, and the judgments are also two: David’s judgment and Solomon’s judgment. The ones being judged are the group of sheep owners and the garden owners who disputed before David, so he issued a judgment, and they disputed before Solomon, so he issued a judgment. Allah the Exalted stated that He gave Solomon understanding of it. He said: And Solomon’s judgment was that the garden owners should take the sheep and benefit from them until the sheep owners restore the garden to its former state. So he made the sheep owners repair the garden, and those [garden owners] utilize the sheep. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Anbya 21:79] You have the explanation; read the judgment to us.
