The questioner : This message was sent by a listener who says he is from Iraq, Anbar Governorate, Taloufah district. He says his name is Naif 'Abd al-Sabir. In his message, he says, “I send my best greetings and respect to your honorable program, which has benefited us and all Muslims with its religious and social legal rulings. On this basis, I am sending this message, which contains some questions. I hope they will be presented to your honorable scholars and that I will receive answers from them, with thanks. I am a person to whom Allah has granted guidance, and I have taken the correct path to Islam and applied all the conditions, from prayer to fasting to the end. I became overly strict, so I turned to one of the Sufi shaykhs and became one of his students. He ordered me to attend the dhikr circle on Mondays and Thursdays of every week, and to send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one thousand times daily, along with other supplications. I ask for guidance on whether the Sufi method is valid in the Islamic Shari'ah and its teachings, or invalid. Please inform us; may Allah reward you?”

The Shaykh : We say: Know that Sufi paths, whether Sufi or not, must be judged by the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). What agrees with them is truth, and what contradicts them is invalid. The majority of Sufi paths are paths of religious innovation, and some may reach the level of disbelief, while others fall short of that. Among this innovation is what you mentioned about your shaykh, who ordered you to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one thousand times every day, along with other supplications. We do not know what these other supplications are, so we cannot rule on them as truth or invalidity. As for the order to send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one thousand times every day, this is undoubtedly a religious innovation with no basis in the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). What I advise you to do is seek out a scholar from the scholars of the Sunnah who are known for following the righteous Salaf, and take your religion from him, and leave the paths you refer to, whether Sufi or otherwise.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
