The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted:. When we look at the practice of al-Bukhari (may Allah have mercy on him) in the book *Tawhid*, we find that he generally begins chapters with verses from the Qur'an. This is because some of the innovators say, "We do not accept as evidence for the attributes anything except what is mass-transmitted (mutawatir), and we do not accept reports with limited chains (ahad)." He (may Allah have mercy on him) wanted to reinforce the ahad reports he presents in the book with verses from the Qur'an, so that no excuse remains for those who reject these names or attributes. This is part of his jurisprudence (may Allah have mercy on him). Do you understand now? The innovators who judge by reason and receive their creed regarding Allah from their minds say, "We do not accept ahad reports in the chapter of attributes, because an ahad report only yields conjecture, and creed must be based on certainty." Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) refuted this false principle in many ways in *Al-Sawa'iq al-Mursalah 'ala Ahl al-Jahiliyyah* (The Lightning Sent Down on the People of Ignorance), and it is worthy of being refuted. It is hasty to say that these people—and this is a digression not in the main subject—accept what their sheikhs compose and what reaches them through their methodology on the basis of ahad reports, and they believe in what their sheikhs and their followers say, even though it comes from a non-infallible source and via an ahad report. This indicates that they are self-contradictory. Chapter: The saying of Allah the Exalted: . "The Peace" is one of the names of Allah, and "The Believer" is one of the names of Allah. "The Peace" is originally a verbal noun (masdar) from the verb *sallama* (to be safe/peaceful), and the verbal noun is *taslim*. The name of the verbal noun (ism al-masdar) in the opinion of grammarians is what has the meaning of the verbal noun but does not include the letters of the verbal noun. This is the name of the verbal noun. *Kalam* (speech) is a name of the verbal noun from *kallama* (to speak), and *Salam* (Peace) is a name of the verbal noun from *sallama* (to be safe). So what is the meaning of "The Peace," which is one of the names of Allah? "The Peace." We said it is a name of the verbal noun, so describing Allah with it is a form of intensification. That Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is *Salam* means He is free from every defect and shortcoming. There is no shortcoming or defect in His life, no shortcoming or defect in His knowledge, no shortcoming or defect in His power, no shortcoming or defect in His hearing, no shortcoming or defect in His sight, and so on. All His names and attributes are free from any shortcoming or defect. As for "The Believer," it is derived from *iman* (faith) and *amn* (safety/security), meaning the verb is *amana* (to believe) or *amma* (to make safe). The meaning of "The Believer" is the One who believes in His messengers regarding what they brought. Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nisa 4:166]. This is a confirmation of what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought. There are many verses with this meaning: [Al-Ma'idah 5:15] [Al-Ma'idah 5:19] [Al-Ahzab 33:45]. And there are many verses on this. So He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is the One who believes in His messengers, and "The Believer" in the sense of *mu'min* (one who makes safe), meaning He makes safe whoever deserves safety, and He is the Believer. So the Believer has safety from Allah. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-An'am 6:82]. So "The Believer" has two meanings: one is *mu'min* in the sense of believing in His messengers, and the other is *mu'min* in the sense of making safe whoever deserves safety. Good. And we said He is a Believer in His messengers, and also a confirmer of others. His messengers are those for whom Allah testified to their truthfulness, as Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said: .
