The Shaykh : The third category: [Al-Ahzab 33:73] O Allah, accept our repentance, O Lord of the worlds, [Al-Ahzab 33:73] the monotheists who have no hypocrisy in them. They are monotheists in opposition to the polytheists, and they are pure in opposition to the hypocrites. Allah will accept their repentance, even if they repented from shirk (associating partners with Allah) and from hypocrisy, Allah would accept their repentance, by the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Az-Zumar 39:53]. How many a polytheist who was hostile to the Islamic call repented, and Allah accepted his repentance! 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was against the call, against the Islamic call. Is that not so? He embraced Islam and became the second caliph in this Ummah (the Muslim community). Khalid ibn al-Walid, 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, and others from the chiefs of Quraysh and its disbelievers embraced Islam, and Allah accepted their repentance. Abu Sufyan, the leader of Quraysh. He used to say on the day of Uhud: "Exalt Hubal, exalt Hubal," because when the war ended and the defeat fell upon whom? Upon the Muslims, because there occurred among them what necessitated defeat, he boasted, he boasted. He said: "Is Muhammad among you?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Why? To humiliate him, and so that he would become arrogant with himself afterwards. Listen, my brother, to the Prophetic wisdom. He said: . To humiliate him, and the second reason is so that he would become arrogant with himself and boast, and so it happened. "Is Ibn Abi Quhafah among you? Is 'Umar among you?" He said: . At that time, he boasted and puffed up, and he thought that he had obtained everything. So he said: "Exalt Hubal." Hubal was an idol for Quraysh in the middle of the Ka'bah, in the middle of the Ka'bah, an idol for Quraysh. "Exalt Hubal" means: How high are you today? Today you are the exalted one; that is the meaning. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: . Now the heat has risen, the matter has reached the Exalted and Majestic. He said: . If you are boasting today about your idol being high, then Allah is higher and more exalted. Then Abu Sufyan, when he was answered with tawhid (the oneness of Allah), came through the message. He said: "The day of Badr is equal to the day of Uhud, and the war is a draw." How was the day of Badr? On the day of Badr, who was the victor? The Muslims, and the chiefs and great men of Quraysh were killed, as is known. He said: "The day of Badr," meaning: Today we defeated you, and you defeated us on the day of Badr, and the war is a draw. Meaning: Sometimes it is for you, and sometimes it is against you. So they answered him: "Not equal, not equal" — meaning: between the two days — our dead are in Paradise and your dead are in the Fire. Are these two days on equal footing after the dead of the Muslims were in Paradise and the dead of the disbelievers in the Fire? No. What I intend from this is that the polytheists openly declare hostility to the believers, and that if a person repents, even if he is a hostile polytheist, Allah accepts his repentance. This man, Abu Sufyan, embraced Islam and became one of the Companions. But his Islam was delayed, so his rank was delayed. Good. So: whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance, even from shirk? Even from shirk, even from hypocrisy, even from mocking Allah and His verses. Listen. What is the evidence that the one who repents from hypocrisy, Allah accepts his repentance? — Brother, you do not know! Subhan Allah! — Who knows the evidence? Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nisa 4:145-146]. But note that Allah mentioned important things meaning: they returned from hypocrisy to pure faith they relied upon Him and held fast to Him [An-Nisa 4:146] three descriptions, . Good. Is the repentance of the one who mocks Allah and His verses valid? The answer, the answer: Yes, it is valid. What is the evidence? The evidence is the saying of Allah the Exalted: [At-Tawbah 9:65]. Whom did He ask? The mockers, because they used to mock and say: "We have not seen like these reciters of ours" — meaning: the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and his Companions — "We have not seen like them, more greedy in bellies, or more lying in tongues, or more cowardly in battle." And they lied, by Allah. These descriptions are exactly those of the hypocrites. Allah the Exalted said: [At-Tawbah 9:65-66] Complete it. Complete it. [At-Tawbah 9:66]. So it means: that Allah may forgive these people, and that is through repentance. So whoever repents, whatever his shirk and kufr (disbelief) may be, Allah will accept his repentance. Good. As for those who repented from kufr and had killed those they killed of the Muslims, are they required to guarantee the Muslims they killed? No, they are not required to, by the saying of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Anfal 8:38]. Therefore, if a person sees someone who was a disbeliever and had killed his father, then he embraced Islam, it is not permissible for him to kill him, because his Islam protected him and He forgave him for what came before.
