Her fourth question: She says, “I want to know the ruling on sa'y, meaning between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Is the sa'y from al-Safa to al-Marwah considered one lap, and from al-Marwah to al-Safa one lap, or two laps? Please inform us, may Allah guide you. We used to count the trip from al-Safa to al-Marwah and the return as one lap, and we were unaware of the correct ruling, may Allah guide you?”

The questioner : Her fourth question: She says, “I want to know the ruling on sa'y, meaning between al-Safa and al-Marwah. Is the sa'y from al-Safa to al-Marwah considered one lap, and from al-Marwah to al-Safa one lap, or two laps? Please inform us, may Allah guide you. We used to count the trip from al-Safa to al-Marwah and the return as one lap, and we were unaware of the correct ruling, may Allah guide you.”

The Shaykh : As for your practice, it is contrary to what is prescribed. However, due to your ignorance, it suffices for you. The prescribed sa'y for which you will be rewarded is only the first seven laps, which in your count amount to three and a half laps.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : The sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwah: from al-Safa to al-Marwah is one lap, and the return from al-Marwah to al-Safa is the second lap, and so on until the seven laps are completed. The completion is at al-Marwah after al-Safa. This is what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Muslims have agreed upon it. No one has said anything contrary to it except a statement that would be an error on the part of its speaker.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
