Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Welcome, His Eminence Shaykh Muhammad.

The Shaykh : May Allah greet you, welcome.

The questioner : Our esteemed Shaykh Muhammad, in one of our previous sessions, we presented a message from the female questioners from Jeddah, E.M.S. We stated that each letter in these initials represents a name they did not wish to disclose. In this session, we wish to complete some of their questions. A person says or asks: If one sees a stranger in a dream, such as an uncle, grandfather, or maternal uncle, etc., is it obligatory to give charity on their behalf? In other words, if one sees them in a dream, please issue a ruling for us, may Allah grant you success.

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. It is not obligatory to give charity on behalf of a deceased person if one sees them in a dream, regardless of the circumstances. Rather, if a person sees the deceased in a state that pleases them, this is good for them, and the person may share this with those they love. If they see the deceased in a disliked state, then what is prescribed for one who sees something they dislike is to seek refuge in Allah from Shaytan and from the evil of what they saw, to spit dryly on their left side three times, and to turn over from the side they were lying on to the other side. They should not tell anyone about it. If it returns to them a second time in their dream, let them get up, spit dryly on their left side three times, seek refuge in Allah from its evil, from the evil of what they saw, and from the evil of Shaytan. They should remember Allah, perform ablution, and pray until this dream in which they saw what they disliked is removed from them.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : This is because Shaytan takes the form of things that sadden a person and bring them worry and grief. Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, indicated Shaytan’s love for what saddens a person by saying:
Private conversation is only from Satan that he may grieve those who have believed, but he will not harm them at all except by permission of Allah إنما النجوى من الشيطان ليحزن الذين ءامنوا وليس بضارهم شيئا إلا بإذن الله
[Al-Mujadila 58:10]
This indicates that Shaytan is eager for what saddens a person, constricts their chest, and brings them worry and grief.
The important point is that it is not obligatory for a person to give charity on behalf of any of their deceased relatives whom they see in a dream.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
