Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Hatim ibn Maymun narrated to us, Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Yazid ibn Kaysan narrated to us from Abu Hazim al-Ashe'ari from Abu Hurayrah, who said: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم لعمه : قل : لا إله إلا الله ، أشهد لك بها يوم القيامة ، قال : لولا أن تعيرني قريش ، يقولون : إنما حمله على ذلك الجزع لأقررت بها عينك ، فأنزل الله : إنك لا تهدي من أحببت ولكن الله يهدي من يشاء The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his uncle: "Say: There is no god but Allah, and I will testify to you with it on the Day of Resurrection." He said: "If it were not that Quraysh would mock me, saying that only grief drove you to this, I would have pleased your eyes with it." So Allah revealed: "Indeed, you cannot guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills."

The Shaykh : This hadith, first of all, the hadith with which the author (may Allah have mercy on him) began is a mursal (a report missing the Companion link) hadith. Why? Because Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib is from the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions), and he narrated from his father, whom he did not see, saying: "When the death of Abu Talib approached, etc." So it is not mursal. It supports the hadith of Abu Hurayrah, and it is the norm that Ibn al-Musayyib narrates his mursal reports. Abu Hurayrah is close in wording to it: "Say: There is no god but Allah, and I will testify to you with it on the Day of Resurrection." And this one says: "O my uncle, say: There is no god but Allah, a word with which I will testify to you before Allah."
