The Book of Faith-09a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Uthman ibn Abi Shaybah and Ishaq ibn Ibrahim narrated to us. Ishaq said: Jarir informed us. Uthman said: Jarir narrated to us from Mansur from Abu Wa'il from Amr ibn Sharahbil from Abdullah, who said:
I asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): Which sin is the gravest in the eye of Allah? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you associate a partner with Allah (despite the fact) that He has created you. He (the reporter) said: I told him (the, Holy Prophet): Verily it is indeed grave. He (the reporter) said: I asked him what the next (gravest sin) was. He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you kill your child out of fear that he shall join you in food. He (the reporter) said: I asked (him) what the next (gravest sin) was. He (the Holy Prophet) observed: Then (the next gravest sin) is that you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.
Sahih Muslim 86a
.

The Shaykh : Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which deeds are most beloved to Allah, and he asked him: which sin is the greatest? Meaning, which of the sins is the greatest. So he asked him about the things most beloved to Allah and about the greatest of the sins. Did he ask him merely to know that this is most beloved to Allah and that this is the greatest of the sins? No, when the Companion asked him that, they only ask in order to compete in the deeds most beloved to Allah and to distance themselves from the greatest of the sins.
They are not like us, asking a theoretical question: this is the most beloved and this is the greatest. They only ask that not out of stubbornness or arrogance, but in order to avoid what is the greatest and to perform what is the most beloved. This is the affair of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them).
He said: The greatest sin is that you make a rival for Allah while He is your Creator. A rival in what? In lordship and in worship, and also in the names and attributes, but they vary in degree. This is the greatest sin.
while He is your Creator وهو خلقك
Meaning: No one shared with Him in your creation, so how can you make Him a rival in creation and in worship?
He said:
I said, "That is indeed a great sin."
Sahih al-Bukhari 4477
And it seems that Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) took this from the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Verily! Joining others in worship, with Allah is a great wrong indeed.
Sahih al-Bukhari 4776
.
I said: Then what is next? He said:
That you kill your child out of fear that he would join you in food
Sahih Muslim 86b
And in this there are two sins: The first sin is the great severance of the family tie, where you killed your child who is a part of you. The second is that it also contains a lack of trust in Allah the Mighty and Majestic, because his saying:
out of fear that he would join you in food
Sahih Muslim 86b
means that your provision will be narrowed for you, while Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:
and do not kill your children out of poverty; We will provide for you and themولا تقتلوا أولادكم من إملاق نحن نرزقكم وإياهم
[Al-An'am 6:151]
, and He says:
And do not kill your children for fear of poverty. We provide for them and for you. Indeed, their killing is ever a great sin.
[Al-Isra 17:31]
.
And this is regarding undutifulness to parents, or rather regarding severance, because undutifulness is with regard to the parents, and severance is with regard to the other relatives.
The third is regarding honor.
He (the inquirer) said (again): What next? He (the Holy Prophet) replied: That you commit adultery with the wife of your neighbour.
Sahih Muslim 86b
He did not say "that you commit unlawful sexual intercourse with her," but
that you commit unlawful sexual intercourse with her أن تزاني
and "tazani" is on the pattern of
Tafaa'ul
, which implies the action from both parties. And it seems that this neighbor, may Allah protect us from that, is trying to deceive the neighbor's wife, who is the wife, so that he will commit unlawful sexual intercourse with her—may Allah grant us safety—and so that she will submit to him. And it is known that if she submits to him, she will be at his disposal whenever he wishes to commit unlawful sexual intercourse with her, unlike if he committed unlawful sexual intercourse with her once, she might not obey him the next time. As for mutual unlawful sexual intercourse—may Allah protect us from that—where it occurs from both parties, this implies that there is a solicitation for unlawful sexual intercourse from both parties. And if that is the case, do not ask about the frequency of the act of immorality between them, especially if they are young.
And this relates to what? To honor.
