The questioner : This is a letter we received from a listener in the Iraqi Republic, from Basra. He signs it only as "the repentant one" and does not mention his name. He says: I hope that if you would be so kind as to issue a ruling for me, is it permissible for a young man to perform Hajj to the House of Allah before marriage, or is it necessary for him to marry first and then perform Hajj? And what are the obligatory conditions upon him? Please inform us. May Allah guide you.

The Shaykh : It is permissible for a young man to perform Hajj before he marries, and there is no blame on him for doing so. However, if he is in need of marriage and fears hardship and difficulty by delaying it, then he should prioritize marriage over Hajj. This is because Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, made the obligation of Hajj conditional on a person being able to afford it. Providing for oneself through marriage is among the necessities. So, if a man or young man is not concerned about performing Hajj and delaying marriage, then he should perform Hajj and marry afterwards. But if delaying marriage is difficult for him, then he should prioritize marriage over Hajj.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.
