The questioner : Greetings to Shaykh Muhammad.
The Shaykh : May Allah greet you, and welcome to you.
The questioner : Noble Shaykh Muhammad, this message we received from the listener Muhammad Ali Muhammad from al-Dawadimi says: Is the sunnah prayed before the prayer, which is the greeting of the mosque, a voluntary prayer? And is it prayed immediately after the Fajr prayer if the time is tight and one did not pray before it? Please inform us?
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. The greeting of the mosque is not the rawatib; rather, the rawatib are other than the greeting of the mosque. However, the rawatib suffice in place of the greeting of the mosque, but the greeting of the mosque does not suffice in place of the rawatib. For example, the Zuhr prayer has a rawatib before it of four rak'ahs with two taslims. If you enter the mosque before the iqamah and you pray these four rak'ahs with two taslims, that suffices for you in place of the greeting of the mosque, and you do not need to pray the greeting of the mosque. But if you pray the greeting of the mosque as two rak'ahs, it does not suffice for you in place of the rawatib.
The questioner : Yes.
The Shaykh : Rather, it is obligatory for you to perform the rawatib. Likewise, regarding the Fajr prayer, if you enter the mosque after the adhan and then you pray the rawatib of Fajr as two rak'ahs, that suffices for you in place of the greeting of the mosque. And if you pray the greeting of the mosque with the intention of the greeting of the mosque, it does not suffice for you in place of the rawatib. Based on this, we say: if you pray, then intend the rawatib, and the greeting of the mosque is dropped from you. And if you pray both, praying the greeting of the mosque first and then the rawatib second, there is no blame on you in this.
