The Shaykh :"As for the people of *tajhiliyyah*, they are many of those who claim affiliation with the Sunnah and the followers of the Salaf", to the extent that some people have said: This is the doctrine of the Salaf, *tajhiliyyah*.
"And the reality of their doctrine is that the texts of the attributes brought by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are unknown words whose meaning is not known, to the point that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) speaks of the hadiths of the attributes and does not know their meaning".
Whose doctrine is this? The people of *tajhiliyyah*, meaning those who claim or describe the creation with ignorance; they make the creation ignorant. For example, he says: The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) does not know what the meaning of the verses of the attributes is. If you asked him what the meaning of
He settled upon the Throne استوى على العرش
is, he would say: I do not know. If you asked him when he said:
Our Lord descends to the lowest heaven when the last third of the night remains ينزل ربنا إلى السماء الدنيا حين يبقى الثلث الأخر
what is the meaning of "descends"? He would say: By Allah, I do not know. If you asked him what the meaning of the saying of the Exalted is:
And the Face of your Lord will remain ويبقى وجه ربك
, he would say: I do not know. What is the meaning of
to that which I created with My hands لما خلقت بيدي
[Sad 38:75]
? He would say: I do not know. Who says this? The Messenger. Who is the one who says "I do not know"? The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
They say: No one knows the meanings of the verses of the attributes; rather, they are in their view like A, B, T, Th, J, H, Kh, and so on.
I ask you now, what is the meaning of A? It has no meaning, yes? It has no meaning. They say:
He settled upon the Throne استوى على العرش
is like A, B, T, Th; we do not know what their meaning is.
And this, in reality, if you reflect on it, you will find that it is among the worst of people's statements, because it implies that these great verses and the numerous hadiths regarding the attributes of Allah all came down as idle talk and play, having no meaning. What is the benefit of a person speaking words whose meaning he does not know? What is the benefit of this?
If a non-Arab came to us now and delivered an eloquent sermon, and we know it is moving because he becomes emotional, raises his hand and lowers it, moves his face and opens it, yes, and he preaches at the top of his voice, but we are Arabs and do not know his language, did we benefit or not? We did not benefit, we did not benefit except that we saw his emotion and movements and said: This is an orator and eloquent, but we do not know the content of his sermon.
They say: These Arabic words in the clear Arabic tongue are in a non-clear Arabic tongue. We do not know.
The Shaykh al-Islam says: "These people are more harmful to Islam than all the sects", because they are the ones who opened the door for the philosophers and logicians to enter, when they saw these people speaking of the Qur'an and the Sunnah and not knowing what their meaning is. He said: Go, I am the one who will show you the meaning. If you asked me what is the meaning of the hand? I would say: By Allah, I do not know. He would say: I am the one who knows, I am the one who will make
the words of Allah have a meaning. The intended meaning of the hand is power.
And it is known that the one who affirms a meaning is better than the one who does not affirm, without doubt, because this one has knowledge and this one does not have knowledge, whether what he affirmed is correct or not. The important thing is that it is not possible for the Qur'an to come down without meaning, or the Sunnah without meaning. So you find that these are the people of *tajhiliyyah*, and they call themselves, in a deceptive and distorted manner, the people of *tafwid*, because it is known that if this one is called a *mufawwid*, it is less severe than if he is called a *mujahhil*. If he is called a *mujahhil*, he makes the Messenger and his Companions ignorant, which is not like the one who says this is a *mufawwid* who delegates their matter to Allah.
And the conclusion is that this is the doctrine of the people of *tajhiliyyah*.
