Explanation of the author's statement: "4- Abandoning sin out of fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and the stronger the urge to commit the sin, the greater the increase in faith by abandoning it"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Fourth: meaning, from the causes of the increase of faith "Abandoning sin out of fear of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and the stronger the urge to commit the sin, the greater the increase in faith by abandoning it, because abandoning it despite the strong urge to commit it is evidence of the strength of the servant's faith and his prioritizing what Allah and His Messenger love over what his soul desires".
This is also from the causes of the increase of faith: abandoning sin, but on the condition that it is out of fear of Allah, because the one who abandons sin is in one of three states:
Either he abandons it because his soul did not desire it, in which case he has no reward and no sin upon him.
Or he abandons the sin out of fear of Allah, in which case he has a reward. For this reason, it is established in the authentic hadith:
That whoever intends to do a bad deed but does not do it, Allah the Exalted writes it for him as a complete good deed. He said: because he only abandoned it for my sake. أن من همّ بسيئة فلم يعملها كتبها الله تعالى حسنة كاملة، قال: لأنه إنما تركها من جرائي
meaning: for my sake.
The third, or the third state: that he abandons the sin due to inability to commit it. He is eager for it, but he is unable. For example, he is watching a person so he does not steal from him; whenever the person tries to steal, he turns to look at him, so he abandons the theft. Why? Due to inability. In this case, he has the ruling of the one who commits it, especially if he strives with the means that lead to it. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When two Muslims confront one another with their swords, both the killer and the slain will be in Hell.” They said: “O Messenger of Allah, (we understand about) this killer, but what is wrong with the one who is slain?” He said: “He wanted to kill his companion.’ إذا التقى المسلمان بسيفيهما فالقاتل والمقتول في النار. قالوا يا رسول هذا القاتل فما بال المقتول ؟ قال : لأنه كان حريصا على قتل صاحبه
Sunan Ibn Majah 3964Sahih (Darussalam)
. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed
That the poor man, if he desires what so-and-so has, who works with his wealth in sin, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: then it is by his intention, and they are equal in the burden of sin. أن الرجل الفقير إذا تمنى مثل ما لفلان الذي يعمل بماله في المعصية قال النبي عليه الصلاة والسلام: فهو بنيته فهما في الوزر سواء
.
So, the one who abandons sin is divided, or has three states: that he abandons it out of fear of Allah, that he abandons it due to inability to commit it, or that he abandons it because it did not occur to his mind.
If he abandons it out of fear of Allah, he is rewarded for that.
If he abandons it due to inability, yes, he is punished for that.
If he abandons it because it did not occur to his mind, then he has neither reward nor sin.
For this reason, we qualified it here, saying: "Abandoning sin out of fear of Allah, and the stronger the urge to sin is in a person, the better it is for him to abandon the sin".
Look at the story of Yusuf (peace be upon him). The urge to sin was strong in his case. Why? Because it was the wife of al-Aziz, who was his master, and she tried to seduce him. And the implication of that was that he should obey her so that she would benefit him.
Second: the woman was of great beauty, and beauty invites one to approach her, does it not? Yes.
Third: she closed the doors, so the barrier was removed.
And despite that, he abandoned this sin out of fear of Allah, as He said:
And she certainly determined [to seduce] him, and he would have inclined to her had he not seen the proof of his Lord ولقد همت به وهم بها لولا أن رأى برهان ربه
[Yusuf 12:24]
.
Then look at the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the seven whom Allah will shade in His shade. He said of one of them:
a man whom a beautiful woman of high rank seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying):" I fear Allah" رجل دعته امرأة ذات منصب وجمال فقال : إني أخاف الله
Sahih Muslim 1031a
.
So, abandoning sin out of fear of Allah is rewarded, and one's faith increases by it. And the stronger the urge to sin, the stronger the increase in faith by abandoning it.
