The reader: "As narrated by al-Nazal ibn Sabitah, from 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, who said: Narrated by Muslim.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the kind of disagreement in which each of the disputants denies the truth that is with the other, because each of the two reciters was doing well in what he recited. He explained this by saying: those who were before us differed and they were destroyed.
For this reason, Hudhayfah said to 'Uthman: when he saw the people of Sham and Iraq differing in the letters of the Qur'an, the kind of disagreement that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade".
The Shaykh : The Prophet forbade it. Do you have a fronting (taqdim) here?
The reader: Yes, the Prophet forbade it.
The Shaykh : Like what I have here.
The student: The Prophet forbade it.
The Shaykh : Yes, there is no harm; it does not contradict.
The reader: "So this yields two things: The first of them is the prohibition".
The Shaykh : "The first of them" comes after a sentence, so it is a new sentence to explain the two things.
The reader: "The first of them is the prohibition of disagreement in such matters.
And the second is taking a lesson from those who were before us, and being wary of imitating them.
Know that most of the disagreement among the Ummah that leads to following desires is of this type, which is that each of the disputants is correct in what he affirms, or correct in part of it, but wrong in denying what the other holds. Just as each of the two reciters was correct in reciting with the letter he had learned, but wrong in denying the other's letter. For most ignorance lies in denial, which is rejection and disbelief, not in affirmation, because a person's grasp of what he affirms is easier than his grasp of what he denies".
The Shaykh : And this is correct, because grasping what is affirmed is easy; a person can... by following up, but denial is from... from following up the scholars from the first to the last until he knows that no one said this. And for this reason, denial is very difficult. So a person must be careful of this matter and not rush to say that no one said this or something similar, because he may err greatly. Yes.
I heard a man recite a verse that I had heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recite differently. So I took him by the hand and went with him to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this to him. I saw disapproval on his face, and he said: Both of you have done well, and do not differ; for those before you differed and they were destroyed.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the kind of disagreement in which each of the disputants denies the truth that is with the other, because each of the two reciters was doing well in what he recited. For this reason, Hudhayfah said to 'Uthman:
I have caught up with this Ummah; do not let them differ in the Book as the nations before them differed in it.
